Delivers Water Directly to the Root Zone

The Right Depth for Burying a Soaker Hose
Depth depends on what you’re growing and what you’re trying to achieve. Here’s the breakdown:
3–6 Inches — Vegetable Gardens and Annual Flower Beds
This is the sweet spot for most garden applications. At 3 to 6 inches, the hose sits just below the typical cultivation depth (so you won’t slice through it when you’re weeding or turning the top inch of soil), and water reaches the root zone of vegetables and annual flowers efficiently. Most vegetable roots are concentrated in the top 6 to 12 inches of soil, so a hose at 3 to 6 inches is right in the middle of that zone.
For row crops — tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash — run the hose down the center of each row or between rows spaced 18 to 24 inches apart. At 3 to 6 inches depth, one hose can water plants on both sides of it within that spacing.
2–4 Inches — Under Mulch in Landscape Beds
In a mulched landscape bed with established perennials or shrubs, burying the hose 2 to 4 inches under the mulch surface is sufficient. The mulch itself acts as additional insulation and evaporation barrier, so you don’t need as much soil depth. This is also easier to access for inspection and removal at the end of the season.
6–8 Inches — Perennial Beds and Established Plantings
For established perennials with deeper root systems, or in areas where you won’t be digging seasonally, burying the hose 6 to 8 inches keeps it out of the way of annual cultivation while still delivering water effectively. At this depth, plan for the system to stay in place for multiple seasons — retrieval becomes more involved.
Avoid Going Deeper Than 8 Inches for Soaker Hoses
Standard soaker hoses rely on water pressure to push water through the porous walls. Too deep and the water may not distribute evenly along the length of the hose — the pressure is absorbed by the surrounding soil before it can seep through effectively. Drip irrigation systems with individual emitters are a better choice for very deep root zone watering.
How to Bury a Soaker Hose: Step by Step
What You’ll Need
A soaker hose in the length you need (100 feet covers most standard garden rows), a garden hoe or flat spade for trenching, landscape staples to pin the hose in the trench before covering, and end caps or a figure-eight end closure for the discharge end of the hose.
Step 1 — Plan Your Layout
Map out where the hose will run before you dig anything. For vegetable rows, measure the row spacing and decide whether to run one hose per row or one hose between every two rows. One hose between rows works well for plants spaced 18 to 24 inches apart — the water spreads laterally enough to reach both sides. For wider spacing or plants with high water demands like tomatoes and squash, run a dedicated hose per row.
Mark the start point (where the hose connects to your water source) and the end point. Plan for the end cap location to be accessible — not buried under a plant you’ll need to move later. Sketch it out if your garden is complex.
Step 2 — Dig the Trench
Use a garden hoe or flat spade to cut a narrow trench 3 to 6 inches deep along your planned hose path. Keep the trench as straight as possible and consistent in depth — uneven depth means uneven water distribution. For vegetable rows, dig down the center of each row before transplanting or seeding so you’re not working around established plants.
Step 3 — Lay the Hose
Unroll the soaker hose and lay it in the trench. Soaker hoses have a tendency to coil back after unrolling — let it sit in the sun for 15–20 minutes before installation to soften it and make it lie flat. Pin the hose to the trench bottom every 3 to 4 feet with landscape staples so it stays in position when you backfill. Keep the hose as straight as possible — sharp bends restrict flow and can cause uneven watering.
At the far end, install an end cap or fold the hose over and secure it with a figure-eight end closure. This keeps soil from entering the hose from the open end.
Step 4 — Connect to Your Water Source
At the inlet end, connect the soaker hose to your garden hose or irrigation system using a standard hose fitting. For a buried system, it’s worth installing a Y-connector at the spigot so you can dedicate one line to the buried soaker system and keep a second line free for hand watering. Install a pressure regulator between the spigot and the soaker hose — most soaker hoses are rated for 8–10 PSI, and standard household water pressure (40–80 PSI) is far too high without regulation. Running a soaker hose at full pressure blows out the porous walls and dramatically shortens its life.
Step 5 — Backfill and Mark the Hose Location
Fill the trench back in with the excavated soil, tamping lightly. Top with an inch of compost or your regular mulch if applicable. Mark both ends of the hose run with a small stake or landscape flag — you’ll want to know exactly where it is when you’re digging at the end of the season or planting next year. A buried hose is very easy to accidentally slice through with a spade if you forget where it is.
Step 6 — Test the System
Run the system for 20–30 minutes and observe. After the run, dig a small test hole near the hose — the soil around it should be moist in a radius of 6 to 12 inches depending on your soil type. Sandy soil spreads water more narrowly; clay soil spreads it more broadly. Adjust your spacing and run time based on what you observe in your specific soil.
Spacing Between Buried Soaker Hose Runs
How far apart to space parallel runs of soaker hose depends on soil type and what you’re growing:
Sandy soil — space hose runs 12 to 18 inches apart. Sandy soil drains quickly and water spreads narrowly from the hose, so closer spacing ensures full coverage.
Loam soil — space hose runs 18 to 24 inches apart. The standard spacing for most vegetable gardens.
Clay soil — space hose runs 24 to 30 inches apart. Clay holds water well and it spreads broadly from the hose. Wider spacing avoids waterlogging.
What Can Go Wrong With a Buried Soaker Hose
Clogging
The most common problem with buried soaker hoses is clogging — soil particles work into the porous walls over time and block the micro-pores that release water. A filter installed at the inlet (between the spigot and the hose) traps sediment before it enters the system. Most soaker hose connection kits include a filter screen — make sure it’s in place and clean it annually.
Root Intrusion
Plant roots actively seek water and will grow into the porous walls of a buried soaker hose over time. This is more of an issue with permanent perennial plantings than with annual vegetable gardens where you’re turning the soil each season. In permanent beds, expect to replace the hose every 3 to 5 years as root intrusion reduces performance.
Pressure Problems
Without a pressure regulator, household water pressure will eventually damage the hose walls. Symptoms include uneven watering (some sections very wet, others dry) and visible blowouts in the hose wall. Always run a pressure regulator at the inlet.
Forgetting Where It Is
Mark both ends of every buried hose run with a durable stake. It sounds obvious but a buried hose is genuinely invisible once covered, and slicing through it with a spade at planting time is a frustrating and common mistake.
Maintaining a Buried Soaker Hose System
At the end of each growing season, disconnect the hose from the water source and drain it completely before the first freeze. Water left in a buried hose can freeze and crack the walls. Most soaker hoses can be drained by simply disconnecting one end and letting gravity empty them — if your garden is relatively flat, blow through the hose from one end to clear any remaining water.
Flush the system annually at the start of the season by running it without the end cap for a few minutes before capping it. This clears any accumulated debris from the previous season.
Inspect the filter screen at the inlet at the start of each season and clean or replace it as needed. A clogged filter is the easiest maintenance item to miss and one of the most common causes of reduced performance.
