Learning how to prevent a clogged AC drain line is one of those home maintenance tasks that takes about 10 minutes twice a year and can save you thousands in water damage repair. How the AC Condensate Drain System Works

That water drips off the coil into a drain pan underneath the air handler, then flows out through the condensate drain line — typically a PVC pipe that runs from the air handler to a floor drain, utility sink, or outside the house.

For attic-mounted air handlers like the kind common in newer two-story homes in Indiana and throughout the South, the stakes are higher than for units in a basement or closet. A clogged condensate line in an attic system can overflow the drain pan, and that water has nowhere to go except into your ceiling and down your walls. A single overflow event can cause thousands of dollars in drywall, insulation, and flooring damage.

The clog itself is almost always organic — algae, mold, mildew, and a slimy biofilm called Zooglea that colonizes the warm, damp interior of the drain pipe over time. The inside of a condensate line is essentially a perfect environment for biological growth: warm, dark, and consistently wet during cooling season. Without regular maintenance, that biofilm gradually narrows the pipe until water can’t pass through.

⚠️ Never Use Compressed Air to Clear a Clogged AC Drain Line

This is the most important thing in this article. If your condensate drain line is clogged, do not use compressed air to clear it.

Condensate drain lines are typically made of PVC and — particularly in older installations — the joints may not be fully glued or may have developed micro-gaps over time. Compressed air creates a sudden pressure spike that can separate pipe joints, blow apart fittings, or crack sections of pipe that are hidden inside walls or ceilings. You’ll clear the clog, but you may create a slow leak inside the wall that causes mold and structural damage for months before you notice it.

The correct tool is a shop vac applied to the exterior discharge end of the drain line. A shop vac creates suction rather than pressure — it pulls the clog out toward the exit rather than pushing it further into the pipe or blowing out joints. This is what HVAC technicians use, and it’s what you should use.

How to Clear a Clogged AC Drain Line

If your line is already clogged — indicated by water in the overflow pan, water dripping from the ceiling near the air handler, or the system shutting off unexpectedly — here’s the correct clearing sequence:

Step 1 — Turn off the system. Shut off the AC at the thermostat and at the breaker before touching anything near the air handler.

Step 2 — Locate the exterior discharge point. The condensate line exits the house somewhere — look for a small PVC pipe dripping or discharging near the foundation, under an eave, or at a utility drain. This is where you’ll apply the shop vac.

Step 3 — Apply the shop vac. Press the shop vac hose firmly against the end of the discharge pipe and run it for 1–2 minutes. You’ll hear a gurgling sound and then feel suction increase as the clog clears. If you have a helper, have them watch the drain pan at the air handler end — you’ll see the water level drop as the clog releases.

Step 4 — Flush with vinegar. Once the clog is cleared, pour 1 cup of distilled white vinegar into the drain line access port (the T-shaped vent cap near the air handler). Let it sit for 30 minutes, then flush with clean water. Vinegar kills algae and mold without damaging PVC.

Step 5 — Clean the drain pan. Wipe out the drain pan with a damp cloth and remove any standing water or debris. Check for rust or cracks while it’s clean — a damaged pan won’t contain overflow properly.

How to Prevent AC Drain Clogs

Vinegar Flush — Twice Per Cooling Season

Pour 1 cup of distilled white vinegar into the drain line access port at the start of cooling season and again mid-summer. The vinegar breaks down biofilm before it has a chance to accumulate into a full clog. This single habit prevents the overwhelming majority of condensate drain clogs in residential systems. Condensate pan tablets sit in the drain pan and slowly dissolve, releasing an antimicrobial agent continuously as condensate water flows over them. They provide ongoing protection between your twice-yearly vinegar flushes and are especially useful in humid climates where biological growth is aggressive. Float Switch — Essential for Attic Systems

A float switch is a safety device that sits in the drain pan or on the drain line and shuts the system off automatically when water rises above a safe level — before it overflows. Evaporator Coil

The evaporator coil sits inside the air handler cabinet. Open the cabinet panel and look at the coil surface — it should look like a clean set of fins, similar to a car radiator. If it’s coated in dust, dirt, or debris, airflow is restricted and the system is working harder than it should. A visibly dirty coil needs professional cleaning — don’t attempt to clean it yourself with household products. If it looks like a block of ice, the system has a refrigerant or airflow problem that needs professional diagnosis.

How to Clean a Dirty Evaporator Coil

If the coil looks dusty or grimy when you open the cabinet, you’re already up there — clean it now rather than scheduling a separate trip. For light to moderate buildup, a no-rinse foaming coil cleaner is the right tool for the job. Spray it directly onto the coil fins, let the foam work for a few minutes, and leave it — the condensate water produced when your system runs will rinse everything away naturally.

One thing worth knowing before you buy: not all no-rinse coil cleaners are created equal when it comes to indoor odor. Some popular options leave a strong chemical smell that circulates through your duct system for hours after application. For an attic air handler where anything you spray gets pushed directly into your living space, choose a low-VOC formula. While you’re in the attic, walk the duct runs and look for disconnected, crushed, or improperly insulated sections. A disconnected duct is essentially air conditioning your attic instead of your living space — you’ll notice rooms that never seem to cool properly and energy bills that don’t match your usage. Duct tape (despite the name) is not appropriate for sealing duct connections — use mastic sealant or metal-backed foil tape rated for ductwork.

Drain Pan Condition

Check the primary drain pan under the air handler for rust, cracks, or warping. A compromised pan won’t contain overflow — it defeats the purpose of having a float switch. If the pan is significantly rusted or cracked, have it replaced at your next service visit. Also check the secondary drain pan (the larger outer pan that catches overflow if the primary drains) for any standing water — standing water in the secondary pan means your primary drain is already partially or fully clogged.

Pest Intrusion

Look for droppings, nesting material, or entry points near the air handler cabinet and duct penetrations. While you’re up there, look at the overall attic condition. A poorly ventilated attic — one that’s excessively hot even by attic standards, or one where you can see significant moisture staining on the sheathing — puts extra strain on the air handler and accelerates degradation of insulation and duct materials. Attic Safety — Go Early, Tell Someone

Attic work in summer is genuinely dangerous. Attic temperatures can exceed 140°F on a hot day, and heat exhaustion can come on quickly. A few non-negotiable rules:

Go early in the morning before the day heats up. An attic that’s 100°F at 7am may be 140°F by noon. Bring water — enough for longer than you think you’ll need. Tell someone you’re going up and when to expect you back. Bring a flashlight or headlamp in addition to your phone.
