Learning how to build a raised garden bed is one of the best projects a new homeowner can tackle — it’s straightforward, relatively inexpensive, and gives you complete control over your soil from day one. I’ve been researching this before building my own, and the same fundamentals come up every time: get the size right, choose the right lumber, and think about irrigation before you fill it with soil rather than after.

Step 1 — Choose the Right Location
Raised garden beds need a minimum of six hours of direct sun per day — eight is better for most vegetables. Walk your yard at different times of day before committing to a spot. A location that looks sunny in the morning may be shaded by a fence or tree by afternoon.
A few other things to nail down before you dig in: the bed needs to be reasonably level — a significant slope causes water to run off one end before it can soak in. You also want to be close enough to a water source that running a hose or soaker line isn’t a project in itself. And check for underground utilities before you stake anything out — call 811 (the national dig-safe line) if you’re planning any ground stakes or border edging.
Step 2 — Decide on Size and Height

The most important rule on width: never build a bed wider than you can comfortably reach across from either side. For most people that’s 3 to 4 feet. A bed you can’t reach the center of without stepping into it defeats the whole point — you’ll compact the soil and damage the root zone every time you plant or harvest.
Length is flexible. Four feet by eight feet is the most common starting size and it’s a good one — manageable, practical, and fits most lumber dimensions without waste. You can go longer, but keep each bed to a length you can walk around without it becoming inconvenient.
Height matters more than most beginners expect. The minimum useful depth for most vegetables is 10 to 12 inches. This gives roots enough room to grow down rather than sideways, improves drainage, and keeps the bed from drying out too fast in summer heat. If you’re building over hard clay or compacted soil, 12 inches is the floor — some gardeners go to 18 or even 24 inches for root vegetables like carrots and parsnips.
Step 3 — Choose Your Lumber
The two most common choices for raised bed lumber are cedar and pine. Cedar is the better long-term material — it’s naturally rot-resistant, handles moisture without warping, and typically lasts 10 to 20 years in a garden setting. The downside is cost: cedar runs roughly two to three times the price of pine.
Pine is a reasonable budget option if you’re just getting started or want to test whether raised bed gardening fits your routine before committing to a more permanent build. Untreated pine in contact with soil will typically last three to five years before it starts to break down.
What to avoid: pressure-treated lumber. Older pressure-treated wood used arsenic-based preservatives, and while modern formulations have changed, the debate about leaching into vegetable garden soil isn’t settled enough to recommend it for food-growing applications. For ornamental beds or flower gardens the risk is minimal, but for vegetables, stick to cedar or untreated pine.
Standard lumber dimensions for a 4×8 raised bed at 12 inches tall:
— Two 2x12x8 boards (long sides)
— Two 2x12x4 boards (short sides)
— Four 4×4 corner posts cut to 14 inches (these anchor into the ground 2 inches and give the frame something to attach to)
Step 4 — Build the Frame

Cut your corner posts to length first — 14 inches gives you 12 inches of bed height with 2 inches below grade to anchor the frame. If your ground is soft, you can skip driving the posts and simply set the frame on level ground, but staked corners hold up better over time and keep the frame from shifting after the first heavy rain.
Attach the side boards to the corner posts using exterior-grade screws — 3-inch deck screws work well here. Pre-drill your holes to prevent the wood from splitting, especially near the ends of boards. Two screws per board end at each corner is sufficient.
Build the short sides first, then attach the long sides to complete the rectangle. Set the frame in position and check for level before driving the corner posts into the ground. A 4-foot level across the top boards will tell you if you need to shim any corners with gravel or soil.
One optional but worthwhile addition: a center support board running across the width of the bed at the midpoint. On an 8-foot bed, the long sides can bow outward over time under the weight of soil. A single 2×4 brace across the middle at ground level prevents this.
Step 5 — Line the Bottom (Optional but Recommended)
Before filling your bed, consider what’s going underneath. If you’re building over grass or weeds, lay cardboard or several layers of newspaper directly on the ground inside the frame. This suppresses the existing vegetation without chemicals and breaks down naturally over the first season. Wet it down before adding soil so it stays in place.
If your ground drains poorly or you’re dealing with persistent weeds that punch through cardboard, a layer of hardware cloth (1/4-inch galvanized mesh) stapled to the bottom of the frame is a more permanent solution. It keeps burrowing pests out and adds a physical weed barrier without blocking drainage.
Skip plastic sheeting on the bottom — it blocks drainage and creates waterlogged conditions at the root zone, which is the opposite of what a raised bed is supposed to do.
Step 6 — Plan Your Irrigation Before You Fill
This is the step most people skip and then wish they hadn’t. Once a raised bed is full of soil, running irrigation through it is messy. Plan the watering setup now, before a single shovelful of soil goes in.
The most efficient option for raised beds is a soaker hose connected to an automatic water timer at the spigot. A hose timer lets you set a watering schedule and walk away — no more hand-watering or trying to remember if you watered yesterday. Set the soaker to run in the early morning when evaporation is lowest.
If you’re running soaker hose across multiple beds, you’ll have sections of hose that travel between beds over bare ground or path areas. That section doesn’t need to emit water — it just needs to carry it from bed to bed. The clean solution is to use a soaker hose kit that includes connectors and end caps — these let you connect sections between beds and seal off any runs that travel over bare ground.
A popular DIY alternative: spray the between-bed sections of soaker hose with Flex Seal spray to block the pores on those sections. It adheres well to rubber hose material and effectively stops water from weeping out where you don’t want it. One important caveat — Flex Seal is not food-certified, so for vegetable beds, use food-grade silicone tape instead to seal the between-bed sections. For ornamental or flower beds, Flex Seal works fine. Either way, let it cure fully (24 hours minimum) before running water through the system.

Step 7 — Fill with the Right Soil Mix
This is where most first-time raised bed builders make the biggest mistake: filling with straight topsoil or garden soil from big bags. Native topsoil compacts quickly, doesn’t drain well, and usually lacks the organic matter that makes raised bed gardening worth doing in the first place.
The standard mix for raised beds is often called “Mel’s Mix” after the square-foot gardening method, but the proportions have become the industry standard for good reason: one-third compost, one-third peat moss or coco coir, and one-third coarse vermiculite or perlite. This combination drains well, retains just enough moisture, stays loose enough for roots to move through easily, and doesn’t compact under repeated watering.

What to Do After the Bed Is Built

Once the frame is up, lined, irrigated, and filled, let the soil settle for a day or two before planting if possible. Watering it down and letting it sit will reveal any low spots that need topping off and gives the soil mix time to begin integrating.
Mark your beds before planting season with a simple layout — even a rough sketch on paper — so you know what’s going where. This makes companion planting easier, helps you rotate crops year to year, and keeps you from overcrowding plants that need room to spread.
Plan to top off the bed with an inch or two of compost each spring. Raised bed soil breaks down over time as organic matter decomposes, and the surface level will drop noticeably after the first full season. An annual compost refresh keeps the mix productive and replenishes nutrients without needing to fertilize heavily.
