Sidewalk cracks vs. driveway cracks — what’s different

The repair method for sidewalk cracks and driveway cracks is essentially identical — same sealant, same prep, same finishing trick. But there are a couple of things worth knowing that are specific to sidewalks:

  • Appearance matters more. A sidewalk crack is front-of-house and visible to anyone walking by — the cosmetic finish of the repair is more important than it is on a driveway. The concrete-dust finishing trick covered below is especially worth doing on a sidewalk.
  • Sidewalk slabs are thinner. Most residential sidewalks are 4 inches thick versus a driveway’s typical 4 to 6 inches. Thinner slabs are more susceptible to cracking from freeze-thaw cycles and tree root pressure, which means the same crack can recur if the underlying cause isn’t addressed.
  • Trip hazard check. Before repairing, check whether one side of the crack sits higher than the other. A raised edge is a trip hazard and a sealant repair won’t fix it — that’s a grinding or slab replacement job, not a filling job.
  • HOA rules. If you’re in an HOA (like many newer subdivisions), check whether sidewalk repairs are your responsibility or the association’s, and whether there are any requirements about materials or color matching. Some HOAs require matching concrete color.

When a crack is not a filling job

Before buying anything, look at what the two sides of the crack are doing. If one side sits higher or lower than the other, if the slab rocks when you step on it, or if the gap is clearly still widening over time, you have a slab that’s moving, settling, or being pushed by tree roots. Sealant fills a gap — it doesn’t lift, level, or re-support a slab. Those situations call for grinding down the raised edge (for a trip hazard) or slab replacement (for a slab that’s significantly settled). The reason most sidewalk crack repairs fail

The most common mistake is using a rigid patching compound — mortar mix, concrete patch, or the gray stuff that dries rock hard. It looks good for a season. Then the concrete expands in summer heat and contracts in winter cold, the rigid fill can’t move with it, and the repair cracks right back out. You’ve done the work for nothing.

The right fix is a flexible polyurethane sealant. It stays slightly rubbery after it cures, so it expands and contracts with the slab through the seasons instead of splitting. How to repair sidewalk cracks, step by step

Read through all the steps before you start — a couple of these are the moves that make the repair hold long-term, and they’re easy to rush past.

Step 1 — Widen hairline cracks

If your crack is tight or hairline, sealant has nothing to bond to — it skims the surface and pops out later. Run your angle grinder with the thin diamond blade down the length of the crack to open it into a small, clean channel about a quarter inch wide. You want the sealant sitting inside a groove with real edges to grip, not smeared across the surface. This is the prep step most people skip, and it’s why their repairs fail.

Step 2 — Clean the crack (blower and shop vac, not a pressure washer)

Hit the crack edges with your wire brush to knock off loose material, then blow out the crack with a leaf blower and follow up with the shop vac to pull the dust from the channel. Skip the pressure washer here — blasting water into a crack can force material out from under the slab and leave a void beneath the concrete. Dry cleaning gets the crack clean without that risk. Keep the concrete dust in the shop vac — you’ll need it in Step 5.

Step 3 — Install backer rod for wide or deep cracks

For cracks wider or deeper than about a quarter inch, press closed-cell foam backer rod into the crack first. Use rod about 25% wider than the gap so it wedges in firmly, and set it about a quarter to three-eighths of an inch below the surface to leave room for the sealant on top. Closed-cell rod doesn’t absorb water — important for a sidewalk crack that sees rain and snow melt. For narrow, shallow cracks, skip this and go straight to sealant.

Step 4 — Apply the self-leveling sealant

Load the sealant into your caulk gun and run a bead down the crack. Self-leveling sealant does the smoothing for you on a flat, horizontal surface — it flows out and settles into an even finish without tooling. That’s why self-leveling is the right product for a sidewalk: gravity does the finishing work. If you’re ever sealing a sloped or vertical crack, switch to a non-sag polyurethane — but for a flat sidewalk, self-leveling is the move.

Step 5 — The finishing trick (this is the one that hides the repair)

Let the fresh sealant sit for 20 to 30 minutes — long enough to start setting up but still tacky on top. Then sprinkle the concrete dust you saved in the shop vac over the bead. Because that dust came from your actual sidewalk, it’s a perfect color and texture match. The repair blends into the surrounding concrete instead of leaving a shiny gray stripe across your walk. On a front-facing sidewalk where appearance matters, this step is the difference between a repair that’s invisible and one that’s obvious. Don’t skip it.

Step 6 — Let it cure

Keep foot traffic off the repair for 24 to 48 hours. Do the work in dry weather between 50 and 100°F. Fall is the ideal time — you want the sealant fully cured before winter freeze-thaw cycles start working the crack. A repair that goes into winter fully cured will flex through the cold rather than crack back open.

What about tree roots pushing up the sidewalk?

If a tree root is the cause of the crack — one side of the slab is rising, or you can see root pressure under the surface — sealant is not the answer. Filling the crack without addressing the root just buys a few months before the slab moves again. Options here:

  • Root pruning + slab grinding: a concrete contractor can grind down the raised edge to eliminate the trip hazard, and an arborist can prune the offending root. This is the standard approach for municipal sidewalk repair when roots are involved.
  • Slab replacement: if the root damage is severe and the slab is significantly displaced, full slab replacement is the permanent fix.
  • Root barriers: for newer plantings near sidewalks, root barriers redirect growth before the problem develops.

Whatever you do, don’t cut a major structural root without consulting an arborist first — large roots close to the trunk can destabilize the tree if removed.

Sealing vs. filling — they’re not the same job

A quick expectations check: filling cracks seals gaps so water can’t get in and freeze, and stops cracks from widening. It is not the same as resurfacing the whole sidewalk (applying a fresh surface coat over the entire slab), and it’s not the same as leveling a sunken slab. Those are three separate jobs. Crack repair is what you do first and most often — resurfacing and leveling are bigger projects for when the slab needs more than a sealed joint.
