If you want to repair cracks in a concrete driveway and have it actually hold, the trick is not the product — it’s doing a couple of small things that most people skip. I’m a new homeowner with my own cracked driveway waiting on me, so before I touched mine I went down the rabbit hole: contractor videos, product data sheets, the whole thing. This is the right way I landed on, written up so you don’t have to do the same digging. It’s not hard. It’s mostly about using a material that moves with the concrete instead of fighting it, and one finishing trick that makes the repair basically disappear.
First, make sure it’s a crack you can actually fill
Not every crack is a filling job. Before you buy anything, look at what the two sides of the crack are doing. If one side sits lower than the other, if a slab rocks when you step on it, or if the gap is clearly still opening up over time, you have a slab that’s moving or sinking — and no filler on earth will fix that. Crack filler seals a gap. It does not lift, level, or re-support a slab. If that’s what you’re seeing, the fix is the cause (the base underneath), and that’s a mudjacking or slab-lifting conversation, not a caulk-tube one.
If the slab is stable and level and you’re just dealing with cracks running across an otherwise solid surface — that’s the job this guide is for. Keep going.
The one mistake that makes cracks come back
Here’s the thing almost everybody gets wrong: they fill the crack with something rigid — mortar mix, a hard patching compound, the gray stuff that dries stiff as a rock. It looks great for a season. Then the concrete expands in summer heat and contracts in winter cold, the rigid filler can’t move with it, and the repair cracks right back out. You did the work for nothing.
The right way is to use a flexible polyurethane sealant instead. It stays slightly rubbery after it cures, so when the slab expands and contracts through the seasons, the sealant stretches and compresses with it instead of splitting. That single choice — flexible instead of rigid — is the difference between a repair that lasts years and one that fails by next winter. Everything else below is just how to give that sealant the best possible bond.
What you’ll need
Here’s the full kit. A couple of these are “pick one,” not “buy both” — I’ll flag those so you don’t overspend.
- Flexible polyurethane sealant (self-leveling) — this is the star of the whole job.
- Caulk gun — to dispense the sealant.
- Closed-cell foam backer rod — for wider or deeper cracks (more on this below).
- Angle grinder — to widen hairline cracks so the sealant has something to grab.
- Thin diamond blade for the grinder (4.5″) — a tile/tuckpointing-style blade cuts the crack open clean.
- A wire brush to clean the crack edges — PICK ONE: a handheld wire brush (cheap, no power needed) OR a wire wheel that spins on your angle grinder (faster, uses the tool you already have out). You do not need both — it’s just power vs. muscle.
- A leaf blower and a shop vac — for cleaning the crack out (yes, not a pressure washer — I’ll explain below).
- Dust mask and safety goggles — non-negotiable, grinding concrete throws silica dust.
One note on eye protection: I’d go with sealed goggles over open-sided safety glasses for this specific job. When you’re running a grinder on concrete, fine silica dust and grit get kicked up in every direction, and goggles seal around your eyes in a way that open glasses don’t. And this isn’t just fussiness — cutting and grinding concrete releases respirable silica dust, which is serious enough that OSHA regulates it as a respiratory hazard linked to lasting lung damage. The mask and the goggles are cheap insurance for your lungs and your eyeballs.
How to repair cracks in a concrete driveway, step by step
Now the actual process. Read all the way through once before you start — a couple of these steps are the “pro” moves that make the whole difference.
Step 1 — Widen the crack (the step everyone skips).
If your crack is tight or hairline, sealant has nothing to bond to — it just skims the surface and pops out later. Run your angle grinder with the thin diamond blade down the length of the crack to open it up into a small, clean channel. You want the sealant sitting in a groove with real edges to grab, not smeared over a hairline. This is the number-one thing DIYers leave out, and it’s why their repairs don’t last.
Step 2 — Clean it out with a blower and shop vac (not a pressure washer)
Hit the crack edges with your wire brush to knock off loose crumbs, then blow the crack out with a leaf blower and follow up with the shop vac to pull the dust out of the channel. Now, most articles will tell you to pressure-wash the crack.
I’d skip that here, and this is the careful/pro approach: a pressure washer can blast water and force material out from UNDER the slab through the crack, leaving a void beneath your driveway you can’t see. That’s the opposite of what you want. Dry cleaning — blower plus vac — gets the crack clean without undermining what’s holding the slab up. (Bonus: keep that concrete dust in the shop vac. You’ll want it in Step 5.)
Step 3 — Add backer rod for wide or deep cracks
If your crack is wide or deep, don’t try to fill the whole thing with sealant — it’s wasteful and it won’t cure right. Push closed-cell foam backer rod into the crack first. Use a rod about 25% wider than the gap so it wedges in snug, and press it down about 1/4 to 3/8 inch below the surface, leaving room for the sealant on top. Make sure it’s the closed-cell kind — closed-cell foam doesn’t have open bubbles and won’t soak up water, which matters in a crack that’s going to see rain. For narrow, shallow cracks you can skip this and go straight to sealant.
Step 4 — Apply the self-leveling sealant
Load the sealant into your caulk gun and run a bead down the crack. Because it’s SELF-LEVELING, it does the smoothing for you — on a flat, horizontal driveway it flows out and settles into a clean, even finish with no tooling required. This isn’t me guessing, either: the manufacturer lists driveways right in the intended uses and describes the cured sealant as permanently elastic — which is exactly the flexibility that keeps the repair from cracking back out.
That’s exactly why self-leveling is the right pick for a driveway: gravity does the finishing work. (If you happen to be sealing a sloped or vertical surface where a self-leveling product would just run downhill, you’d switch to a non-sag / tooling-grade polyurethane instead — but for a normal flat driveway, self-leveling is the move.)
Step 5 — The pro finishing trick (this is the one)
Remember that concrete dust you saved in the shop vac? Here’s where it earns its keep. Let the fresh sealant sit for about 20 to 30 minutes — long enough to set up a little but still tacky on top.
Then sprinkle your saved concrete dust over the bead. Because that dust literally IS your driveway, it’s a perfect color and texture match — the repair blends into the surrounding concrete instead of leaving a shiny gray line running across your driveway. This is the trick that separates a “you can tell someone patched it” job from a “what crack?” job. Do not skip it.
Step 6 — Let it cure
Give the sealant 24 to 48 hours before driving or parking on it. Do the work in dry, mild weather — roughly 50 to 100°F — so it cures properly. Fall is honestly the ideal time to tackle this, because you want it done and cured BEFORE winter’s freeze-thaw cycles start prying at the crack. A repair that’s fully cured going into winter will ride out the cold way better than a fresh one.
Filling cracks isn’t the same as leveling or sealing
Quick expectations check so you don’t feel like you missed something. Filling cracks is one specific job: closing gaps so water stays out and they don’t spread. It is NOT the same as leveling a sunken slab (that’s lifting the concrete back up), and it is NOT the same as sealing your whole driveway (that’s a separate surface-protection coat you’d roll over the entire slab later).
Those are three different projects. Crack repair is the one you do first and most often — think of whole-driveway sealing as a maintenance step for down the road, not part of this job.
