How to use this calculator
Start by picking your mode. The calculator handles two different jobs:
- New bed / top-dressing: use this when you’re spreading a layer of compost on top of an area — a new raised bed, a garden plot, or a lawn top-dressing. Enter your area dimensions and how deep you want the compost layer. For lawn top-dressing, 0.25 to 0.5 inches is typical. For new garden beds, aim for 1 to 3 inches.
- Amend existing soil: use this when you’re tilling or digging compost into soil that’s already there. Enter how deep you’re working the soil and what share of that depth you want to be compost. A one-third compost blend mixed into the top 6 inches is a common starting point for garden beds.
Then pick your area shape — rectangle, circle, or a standard raised-bed size — enter your dimensions, and choose your bag size so the bag count is accurate for what’s on the shelf at your store. A standard 4×8 raised bed filled to a 6-inch depth needs about 0.6 cubic yards — roughly 16 to 17 bags of 1.5 cu ft compost. If you’re topping off an existing bed rather than filling it from scratch, a 1-inch refresh layer on that same 4×8 bed takes only about 0.1 cubic yards, or 3 bags. How much compost do I need for a lawn?
For a lawn top-dressing, the typical application is a quarter to half an inch — thin enough that it filters down between the grass blades without smothering them. At a quarter inch, a 1,000 square foot lawn needs about 0.77 cubic yards. At half an inch, that same lawn needs about 1.5 cubic yards — which is where bulk compost delivery starts to make more sense than hauling bags. Bags vs. bulk compost — which is the better buy?
The answer depends almost entirely on volume. For small projects — a couple of raised beds, a patch of garden — bagged compost is the practical choice. No minimum order, no delivery scheduling, and you can grab exactly what you need. For anything over about half a cubic yard, the math usually flips. Bulk compost from a landscape supply yard is sold by the cubic yard and delivered loose — significantly cheaper per unit than bags, and a lot less plastic. What to do after you get your compost
Once your compost is in, a few things worth knowing. Compost settles — plan on adding about 10% extra to account for it compacting over the first few weeks, especially in raised beds. If you’re topdressing a lawn, water it in lightly after spreading so it works down into the thatch. And if you’re amending existing soil, work it in while the ground is workable — not when it’s waterlogged or bone dry — so it distributes evenly.
