How Much Driveway Sealer Do You Actually Need?
The standard rule of thumb is one 5-gallon bucket of asphalt sealer covers 250–300 square feet per coat. Concrete sealer runs a bit less — closer to 200–250 square feet per gallon depending on how porous the surface is. The condition of your driveway matters too. A surface with visible cracks and rough texture will absorb more sealer than a smooth, well-maintained one. If your driveway is in rough shape, budget an extra bucket as a buffer — running short halfway through is a headache you don’t want.
Asphalt vs. Concrete: Does It Change the Math?
Yes, a little. Asphalt and concrete sealers are completely different products — they’re not interchangeable. Asphalt sealer is coal tar or asphalt-based, designed to flex with the pavement as it expands and contracts. Concrete sealer is typically acrylic or penetrating silane, and it’s formulated for a harder, less porous surface.
Coverage rates are also slightly different. Concrete tends to be more variable because older or rougher concrete absorbs product faster. If your concrete is more than 10 years old or has never been sealed, lean toward the lower end of the coverage estimate and buy an extra gallon to be safe.
Should You Do One Coat or Two?
Two coats is the standard recommendation for most driveways, and it’s what I’d go with for any driveway that hasn’t been sealed in a few years. The first coat soaks in and seals the surface. One coat is fine for a maintenance seal on a driveway you’ve been keeping up every two to three years. If you’re sealing for the first time or starting fresh after years of neglect, go with two.

Do You Need Crack Filler Before Sealing?
If you have visible cracks wider than a hairline, yes — fill them first. Sealer is not a crack filler. It will coat over small cracks and slow their growth, but it won’t bridge or fill them. Cracks you leave unsealed will keep spreading under the surface, especially through winter freeze-thaw cycles.
For asphalt cracks, a tube of asphalt crack filler handles most standard repairs. Let it cure fully — usually 24–48 hours — before applying sealer over it. For concrete, look for a self-leveling polyurethane or epoxy-based filler rated for concrete joints.
What About Oil Stains?
Oil stains need to come off before you seal. Sealer won’t bond properly over oil, and the stain will bleed through and show even after you’ve coated the surface. A dedicated concrete and asphalt degreaser applied a day before sealing takes care of most stains. Scrub it in, let it dwell, rinse well, and give the surface time to dry completely before you start.
When’s the Best Time to Seal a Driveway?
Late spring through early fall is the ideal window — you want air and surface temps between 50°F and 90°F, and no rain in the forecast for at least 24–48 hours after application. Morning applications work well because you avoid peak afternoon heat, which can cause sealer to dry too fast and bubble.
Avoid sealing a brand-new asphalt driveway right away. New asphalt needs at least 6–12 months to cure and off-gas before sealer will bond properly. Sealing too early can actually trap oils in the asphalt and cause long-term softening.
How Often Should You Seal Your Driveway?
Every 2–3 years is the standard recommendation for asphalt. More often than that and you risk buildup that peels and flakes. Less often and you lose the UV and moisture protection that keeps the surface from oxidizing and cracking. If your driveway has started to look gray and faded instead of black, it’s probably time.
Concrete driveways can go longer between sealings — typically every 3–5 years depending on climate and traffic. If water stops beading on the surface when it rains, that’s a sign the sealer has worn off.
