A rain garden is one of the most effective drainage solutions you can add to a yard — it captures runoff from your roof and impervious surfaces, absorbs it through deep-rooted plants, and prevents it from pooling or flooding your lawn. The challenge is getting the size right. Too small and the garden overflows during every moderate rain. Too large and you’re doing more work than necessary. This calculator takes your drainage area, soil type, and garden shape and tells you the minimum size you need, how deep to dig, how long it should take to drain, and what soil amendments will make it work.

- Mulch the basin with 2–3 inches of shredded wood mulch to reduce erosion during establishment

How to Use This Calculator
Start by entering the roof area that drains toward your planned rain garden location. You only need the footprint of that roof section — not the actual sloped surface area. If a downspout serves one side of a 2,000 square foot home, enter roughly 500–700 square feet depending on how much roof that downspout collects. Add any other impervious surfaces that drain the same direction — a section of driveway, a patio, or a compacted lawn area.
The design storm rainfall defaults to 1 inch, which is the standard used by most university extension programs for residential rain garden sizing in Indiana and the Midwest. If you’re in a higher-rainfall region or want to size for larger storm events, increase this value.
Soil type is the most important variable. Sandy soil drains fast and needs a deeper basin. Clay soil drains slowly, needs significant amendment, and should prompt you to consider a smaller garden with an overflow pipe rather than trying to build a garden large enough to handle heavy clay on its own.
Where to Put a Rain Garden
Placement matters as much as size. A rain garden needs to be at least 10 feet from your foundation — closer than that and you risk directing water toward the house rather than away from it. It should be at least 50 feet from any septic system. Beyond those constraints, the best location is wherever water naturally wants to go — the low point in your yard that receives runoff from the roof or driveway.
The garden should be positioned so the inlet end is uphill of the basin and the basin sits in a natural low point. If your yard is relatively flat, you may need to excavate the basin slightly deeper to create the depression. If your yard slopes significantly, position the garden across the slope so it intercepts runoff rather than letting it continue downhill.
Avoid placing a rain garden under a large tree. Tree roots will eventually find their way into the amended soil, and the canopy intercepts rainfall before it can reach the garden.
Rain Garden Depth and Drainage Time
The depth of your rain garden determines how much water it can hold and how quickly it drains. The calculator recommends depth based on your soil type — sandy soil can support a deeper basin that drains faster, while clay needs a shallower basin with significant soil amendment to drain within the recommended 48-hour window.
The 48-hour drain time is the standard that most extension programs use for residential rain gardens. Water that sits longer than 48 hours after a storm creates mosquito habitat and stresses the plants — both of which defeat the purpose of the garden. Soil Amendment and the Rain Garden Mix
The soil inside the rain garden basin is not the same as the surrounding yard soil — it needs to be amended to drain faster than typical lawn soil while still supporting deep-rooted plants. The calculator gives you a specific amendment recommendation based on your soil type, but the general principle is the same across all soil types: increase infiltration with coarse sand, improve plant support with compost, and never use straight clay or straight sand as the basin fill.
For clay soils, the amendment is substantial — the top 12–18 inches of the basin should be replaced with a rain garden mix rather than simply amended in place. Clay particles are too fine and too dense to be fixed by mixing in sand; you need to change the material, not just the proportion.
Plant Selection for Indiana Rain Gardens
Native plants are the best choice for a rain garden because they’ve evolved to handle the wet-dry cycles that a rain garden creates. Their deep root systems are what make the garden function — those roots create channels in the soil that dramatically improve infiltration compared to turf grass. Non-native ornamentals typically have shallower roots and less tolerance for standing water, which means they establish poorly and contribute less to the drainage function.
For Indiana and the Midwest, strong rain garden plant choices include: swamp milkweed, blue flag iris, and joe-pye weed for the wettest zone at the bottom of the basin; black-eyed Susan, switchgrass, and cardinal flower for the middle zone; and prairie dropseed, purple coneflower, and wild bergamot for the upper edges where soil stays drier between events. The key is using at least three species and spacing them to allow each to establish without competition.
Rain Garden vs. French Drain vs. Dry Creek Bed
These three drainage solutions often get confused because they solve similar problems. A rain garden absorbs surface runoff through soil infiltration and plant uptake — it’s best for a specific collection point where water naturally wants to go. A French drain intercepts subsurface water moving through the soil and redirects it — it’s best for persistent pooling that doesn’t clear within 24 hours. A dry creek bed channels surface runoff across the yard to a discharge point — it’s best when you need to move water from one place to another.
A common and effective combination is a dry creek bed that channels runoff from a downspout across the yard, terminating in a rain garden that absorbs it. This moves water away from the foundation and gives it somewhere to soak in rather than pooling on the lawn surface.
